Hello all you early period garb experts out there!

I need your advice about this particular illumination - especially the leggings.
Sacramentary Closeup
I'm trying to recreate this garb, and I need to know how they would work. How did they connect at the tops? The document is a French Sacramentary from the first half of the 11th century, and I understand that therefore it dates from before all-in-one leggings.

Also, I don't know how to interpret the decorative elements on the leggings. It certainly looks like they've got straps crossed around them to keep them on, which I've read about before - but how do I interpret the detail around the knee? Here's a closeup of the area I'm talking about:

Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

As to how to make the leggings, you could either make pants (yes they had pants, simple ones) and then cross garter them to bring them close to the leg. Or you could make a pair of Hosen and Braies like Mike wears. The earlier period ones were (as far as I know) similar to the bias cut 14th c ones, only they were looser, and were less fitted/shaped at the top. If you want more details on how to make these, let me know.

The detail appears to be a garter to me, possibly a separate item, or possibly the tops of the cross garters wrapped several times under the knee to keep them up.

Thank you Helly - that's exactly the info I needed. I'm going to go with the pants and cross garters option - when you see the final item you'll understand why that was the best choice.

*hugs and kisses*

Does the bottom edge match what was below the knee? It makes me wonder if it is a garter (because I am unaware of ankle garters).
